Why Thesis Margins Matter
When you submit your thesis for binding, the most common mistake is ignoring the Gutter Margin. This is the extra space on the left side (for single-sided) or alternating sides (for double-sided) that gets consumed by the glue and stitching. Without it, your text will be buried in the spine, making it impossible to read without cracking the binding.
Standard Thesis Margin Requirements
While every university has specific guidelines, the following are the industry-standard requirements for 2026:
- Left Margin (Binding Side): 1.5 inches (3.81 cm)
- Right Margin: 1.0 inch (2.54 cm)
- Top Margin: 1.0 inch (2.54 cm)
- Bottom Margin: 1.0 inch (2.54 cm)
These dimensions ensure that after the trimming and binding process, your document looks centered and professional.
How to Set Gutter Margins in a PDF
If you have already converted your document to PDF and realize the margins are too small, you don't need to go back to Word or LaTeX. Use our Add Margins tool to increase the white space. For most hardbound theses, adding an extra 0.5 inch (36pt) to the left margin is the sweet spot.
Duplex (Double-Sided) Printing Considerations
If you are printing double-sided, your binding margin must alternate: left side on odd pages and right side on even pages. This is known as 'Mirror Margins'. If your PDF doesn't have this, it's safer to stick to single-sided printing or use a professional PDF editor to adjust the page boxes.

- Verify Image Resolution: Scanned diagrams should be at least 300 DPI.
