Overview

Indian educational regulators set minimum attendance percentages. Falling below these thresholds can result in exam detention (not being allowed to sit for exams).

Engineering Colleges (AICTE)

Minimum: 75%

AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education) mandates 75% attendance for all engineering programs. This applies to:

  • B.Tech / B.E.
  • M.Tech / M.E.
  • Diploma programs

Consequences of falling below 75%:

  • Detention from end-semester exams
  • Warning letters to parents
  • Some colleges allow condonation up to 65% with medical certificates

Medical Colleges (NMC)

Minimum: 80%

The National Medical Commission requires higher attendance:

  • MBBS: 80% in theory AND practicals separately
  • BDS: 80%
  • Internship: Near 100%

Medical attendance is tracked more strictly because clinical exposure directly affects competency.

Law Colleges (BCI)

Minimum: 75%

Bar Council of India mandates 75% for:

  • 3-year LLB
  • 5-year integrated BA LLB
  • LLM programs

Arts, Commerce & Science (UGC)

Minimum: 75% (recommended)

UGC recommends 75% but individual universities can set their own thresholds. Some state universities allow as low as 65%.

CBSE Schools

Minimum: 75% for board exams

Students need 75% attendance to receive their board exam admit card.
