Understanding Weighted Grades
In most college courses, not all assignments are created equal. A final exam might be worth 40% of your grade, while a single quiz is only worth 5%. This is a Weighted Grading System, and calculating your standing requires more than just a simple average.
The Weighted Grade Formula
To calculate your current grade, use this formula:
Final Grade = (w1 × g1) + (w2 × g2) + ... + (wn × gn)
Where:
- w = Weight of the category (as a decimal)
- g = Your grade in that category
Example:
- Exams (50% weight): Scored 80% → 0.50 × 80 = 40
- Assignments (30% weight): Scored 90% → 0.30 × 90 = 27
- Quizzes (20% weight): Scored 70% → 0.20 × 70 = 14
- Total Grade = 40 + 27 + 14 = 81% (B)
How to Calculate 'What Do I Need on the Final?'
This is the most common question students ask. If you want a target grade (e.g., 90%) and the final exam is worth 30% of your total grade:
Required Final = [Target − (Current Grade × Current Weight)] / Final Weight
If your current grade is 85% on 70% of the coursework:
Required Final = [90 − (85 × 0.70)] / 0.30 = [90 − 59.5] / 0.30 = 101.6%
In this case, an 'A' might be out of reach unless there is extra credit! Use our Final Grade Calculator to run these scenarios instantly.
Tips for Managing Weighted Grades
- Front-load your effort: Getting high scores on early assignments (even low-weight ones) builds a 'cushion' for the final.
- Focus on high-weight categories: Improving your exam score by 5% often impacts your final grade more than a 20% improvement in homework.
- Track your syllabus: Weights can change! Always check the latest version of your course syllabus before doing the math.
