What is CGPA?
CGPA stands for Cumulative Grade Point Average. It represents your overall academic performance across all semesters at VTU (Visvesvaraya Technological University).
The VTU CGPA Formula
VTU uses a 10-point grading system. The formula is:
CGPA = Σ(Ci × Si) / ΣCi
Where:
- Ci = Credits for each subject
- Si = Grade point scored in that subject
Grade Points at VTU
- O (Outstanding) — 10 points
- A+ (Excellent) — 9 points
- A (Very Good) — 8 points
- B+ (Good) — 7 points
- B (Above Average) — 6 points
- C (Average) — 5 points
- P (Pass) — 4 points
- F (Fail) — 0 points
Step-by-Step Example
Let's say you have 5 subjects in a semester:
- Maths (4 credits) — A+ (9) → 4 × 9 = 36
- Physics (4 credits) — A (8) → 4 × 8 = 32
- Programming (3 credits) — O (10) → 3 × 10 = 30
- Electronics (3 credits) — B+ (7) → 3 × 7 = 21
- English (2 credits) — A+ (9) → 2 × 9 = 18
Total credit points = 36 + 32 + 30 + 21 + 18 = 137
Total credits = 4 + 4 + 3 + 3 + 2 = 16
SGPA = 137 / 16 = 8.56
Converting CGPA to Percentage
VTU uses a specific formula:
Percentage = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10
So a CGPA of 8.56 → (8.56 − 0.75) × 10 = 78.1%

Frequently Asked Questions
Is VTU's formula the same as UGC?
No. UGC uses % = CGPA × 9.5, but VTU uses % = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10. Always use the VTU-specific formula.
Can I improve my CGPA after graduation?
No. CGPA is final once your degree is conferred. Focus on performing well each semester.
