The Standard UGC Formula
The University Grants Commission (UGC) recommends:
Percentage = CGPA × 9.5
This is used by most universities following the CBCS (Choice Based Credit System).
University-Specific Formulas
Different universities use different conversion formulas:
- UGC Standard: % = CGPA × 9.5
- VTU: % = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10
- SPPU (Pune): % = 7.25 × CGPA + 11
- Mumbai University: % = 7.1 × CGPA + 12
- Anna University: % = CGPA × 10
- AKTU: % = CGPA × 10
- GTU: % = CPI × 10
Why Do Formulas Differ?
Each university calibrates its formula based on the distribution of grades in their system. VTU's formula accounts for a slightly different bell curve than UGC's.
Which Formula Should I Use?
Always use your university's official formula. If your university doesn't specify one, use the UGC standard (× 9.5).

Quick Reference Table
- 10.0 CGPA → 95.0% (UGC) / 92.5% (VTU)
- 9.0 CGPA → 85.5% (UGC) / 82.5% (VTU)
- 8.0 CGPA → 76.0% (UGC) / 72.5% (VTU)
- 7.0 CGPA → 66.5% (UGC) / 62.5% (VTU)
- 6.0 CGPA → 57.0% (UGC) / 52.5% (VTU)
For Job Applications
Most recruiters accept the UGC formula. If asked for percentage and your transcript only shows CGPA, mention the formula you used.
